Forget everything you think you know about craft beer!

Out in Bathurst, a new brewery is re-writing all the old rules – and it tastes better than ever.

As a former self proclaimed inner-west hipster and beer enthusiast, I know first hand that the brewing scene can feel like a bit of a boys club. But one Aussie brewery is proving that you don’t need a beard and flannel shirt to brew award-winning beer (although the flannel won’t hurt!).

Grace Fowler didn’t set out to be one of the best brewers in the country. 15 years ago a friend asked her if she wanted to give brewing a go. Her response?
Sure!
While she makes it sound easy – her journey hasn’t been without it’s challenges.
Moving to Bathurst to start a brewery with a newborn smack-bang in the middle of a global pandemic may not have been the smoothest of origin stories for Reckless brewery. Some may have even called the decision itself reckless! But for Grace, her husband and their many loyal customers in Bathurst – it was a case of right place at the right time.  Fast forward to today and her creative take on a tried and true Aussie beer is up for the Sydney Royal Easter Shows most prestigious award – The Presidents Medal.

This award recognizes and rewards producers of fine food and beverages across the country based on three main criteria- sustainability of environmental, economic and social-good management practices through the production cycle. This year Reckless Brewery’s BX Old was up for the award. But beyond the beer – reckless brewery stands for so much more. 2 thirds of its share holders are female as are 50% of its employees – and this diversity is what gives Reckless an edge when it comes not only to the inclusive culture and community they create from their country town taproom, but also in the creativity and quality of their products and practices.

“Having diverse voices in brewing doesn’t just create a more inclusive space” Grace says. “It actually helps us push the boundaries and brew better beer.”

If you’re wondering if Grace and the girls at Reckless are keeping up with the boys, I’d say the proof is in the pint!
