Social isolation is a totally new experience to a lot of us. Making sure we stay happy and healthy while at home should be the number one priority. In the week ending 27th March, Australians spent 34% more on alcohol than at the same period in 2019. While this figure could be offset by the closure of pubs and bars across the country, experts are warning that on top of the pandemic, we’re facing a second public health crisis: heavy drinking.
While it may ease stress in the moment, there are long-term effects from drinking too much on your mental and physical health overall. Experts are advising of ways to ensure that you’re staying healthy and consuming alcohol in moderation while we’re at home.
- Try and form some brand new habits such as exercise routines, cooking new food, meditation, yoga or creative time alone. Make sure this is an opportunity to come out the other end even healthier and mentally stronger than before!
- Try a long-term project such as learning a new language, or reading a series of books that you haven’t had the time to look at in a while.
- If you’re struggling, there are plenty of resources online to ensure that you are happy and healthy. The Australian government is now offering medicare rebatable online counselling sessions for anybody struggling.
Liquorland, Vintage Cellars, Dan Murphy’s, BWS and Aldi have signed up to the code put together by bottle shop industry body Retail Drinks Australia that is in place from today. This limits the sale of alcohol. Beer, cider and pre-mixed spirits will be limited to two cases, and wine to 12 bottles per customer. Limit your consumption, and stay safe!
