One of the highlights is the Arts and Crafts competition which gets 5000 entries each year in different categories including it has quilting, cake decorating, sugar art, pottery, ceramics. Recently cake decorating has gained popularity.

This year the show has been cancelled due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Over its 200 year history it has only been cancelled 3 times before, once due to the Spanish flu another time due to the Great Depression. There are other RAS events lined up for later in the year however, such as the Royal Melbourne Show Art, Craft and Cookery Competition in September.
