Earlier this week AFTRS Student Dylan Caple had a chance to interview Joanne Hamilton of Balgarra Designs.
The stall is only one of a few representing independent Indigenous businesses at the show this year. The company is 100% Aboriginal owned and operated by sisters Joanne Hamilton, Michelle Hamilton and lifelong friend Leona McGrath who formed the company in 2018.
In addition to their beautiful authentic Indigenous hand painted and printed products, the trio run a series of workshops in Cultural Awareness Training, ‘Escape & Create’ getaways as well as their ‘Taste & Create’ workshops located in Ingham.
They began their business by attending local stalls and markets in the Sydney region and are fierce advocates for Indigenous change and education in the youth sector.
Balgarra Designs are located in the Fashion and Lifestyle Pavillion adjacent to the Woolworths Dome.
