Did you know you could change someone’s life by buying a scone?
The Country Women’s Association (CWA) is more than just scones or being part of a community, but also about giving back to that same community.
“I joined when my children were young and for me it was just to be involved with the local community and meeting the women,” the CWA Chairperson Donna Robertson said. “It doesn’t matter if you can cook. It doesn’t matter if you know how to do crafts. There’s a little bit of something for everyone.”
The association has been catering at The Royal Easter Show in Sydney for more than 70 years and some the funds have gone scholarships and disaster relief locally and internationally.
“We’ve sent lots of money away to flood victims and fire victims and that sort of thing. And also, international funds that we send money to the islands for help for women.”
The Royal Easter Show is an important event, not just because of its 200-year-old legacy, but because it is the association’s largest fundraiser of the year, which means that these funds and scholarships can continue to exist.
“I think last year we raised $10,000,” Robertson said. That money that the CWA raised in 2024 came from a Donation made by Berenberg Farms.
Last October, the CWA donated $40,000 from their disaster relief in response the severe thunderstorms that left Boken Hill without power.
Robertson said that if you come to them for a snack during the Royal Easter Show, you should just be patient and line up.
“You’ll get there and there’ll be a seat and a table for you at the end.”
