Dog Agility is “Poetry in Motion” According to Professional Judge Karen Winzar

Have you ever wondered what it’s like to judge a Dog Agility Competition?

Karen Winzar watches dogs navigate jumps, weave through poles and negotiate obstacles for a living. “I live the best life”, she said. Any dog lover would agree!

Winzar is one of Australia’s most experienced judges in Dog Agility. She appears at The Sydney Royal Easter show annually, and has been invited to judge the Australian National Agility Competition in July later this year! She described this elite invitation as the “pinnacle” of her judging career so far.

Despite Dog Agility being scored on speed and accuracy, Winzar loves to witness the undeniable bond between a dog and their handler. The more responsive a dog is to their cues, the stronger the connection. Their relationship is vital in creating a successful performance!

Britt asked Winzar for her top tips for handlers hoping to succeed in the competition. “Patience is key”, she said. “Give your dog time to process and think about what you’ve just taught them, and allow the dog to try and be correct. Don’t correct them yourself. That’s what I live by”.

Although Dog Agility does not have a huge spotlight in the sporting world, Winzar believes that it deserves one. The vibe of a crowd cheering and laughing creates a lively atmosphere that is enjoyed by all. She hopes that the public takes the sport on board. There are spectacular runs, and spectacularly entertaining runs!
