A GREEN SURPRISE AT THE SYDNEY ROYAL EASTER SHOW
Is your morning coffee a non-negotiable? Same here – especially while we’re broadcasting live from the Sydney Royal Easter Show! Yesterday, with a soy cappuccino in hand, I stumbled upon a charming little stall that’s giving your used coffee cups a second life.
Tucked along Showground Road, right beside the Woolworths Dome, you’ll find the Coffee Cup Plant Refill Bar. This hidden gen is run by passionate volunteers who invite you to bring your empty coffee cup (or any empty cup), and refill it – not with caffeine, but with a fresh little plant to take home.
Choose from fragrant herbs like rocket or sweet floral seedlings such as marigold and Alyssum. The best part? It’s free! This initiative is all about sustainability, transforming waste into a feel-good, take-home botanical keepsake.
To care for your new plant buddy, volunteers suggest that you simply poke a few holes in the bottom of your cup, pop it on a sunny windowsill, and water it every few days. Once it starts growing, transfer it to a larger pot or straight into your garden bed in direct sunlight, to watch it thrive.
The Sydney Royal Easter Show is aiming high – with a goal of net zero carbon emissions by 2050. Last year alone, the show recycled a whopping 5,600m3 of muck, up-cycled 450m3 of wood-chip timber from the woodchopping arena into poultry bedding, and 60% of on-site water was recycled. Pretty impressive, right?
Catch up on the Show Radio podcast here, from Monday 21st April, to hear field reporter Rosh & I chat with the passionate green thumbs behind the Coffee Cup Plant Refill Bar. Trust us – it’s a feel-good story you don’t want to miss.
