We were lucky to catch up with Gus from the Sydney University Marching Band Association (SUMBA). The band have been coming to the Sydney Royal Easter Show for the last two years and love performing for the patrons and supporters of the show. According to Gus, one the band’s favourite things about the Royal Easter Show is the atmosphere and the crowd interaction, including when families in the crowd clap along and do the letters to the YMCA as the band perform it!
Gus has been with SUMBA for three years and recently became its president. He describes SUMBA as a ‘thriving student organisation’ and in his role as president, Gus plays a big part in coordinating events for the band. As well as being SUMBA’s president, Gus is also the band’s tenor saxophonist. His favourite song to play is ‘Oye Como Va’ by Tito Puente and it has become SUMBA’s unofficial anthem. The band has even added the Neil Diamond hit ‘Sweet Caroline’ to its repertoire especially for the crowds at the Sydney Royal Easter Show.
