Reducing Dizziness on Show Rides

Dizziness. Even reading the word can make you feel ill. And unfortunately for our dizziness-averse friends, The Sydney Royal Easter Show is full of spinning rides.

But worry not!

This article is here to quell your fears and have you twirling on the teacup ride in no time. We have sourced out a junior doctor, Dr. Lachlan Roach, who has provided some tips on what to do to stay sick-free when you are enjoying rides at The Sydney Royal Easter Show.

But first, what is dizziness? Dr. Roach explains that there is “fluid in our inner ear that tells us where we are in space” and that when we spin, the fluid spins too. Unfortunately, when we finally stop, “the liquid will continue to move, making us think we are still spinning” and making us feel dizzy.

So… how can we stop this fluid from messing with your head?

Well, the boring answer is practice. The more interesting answer is to do something called, “soft focus”. He says the key to avoid the feeling of dizziness is to “soft focus on things around you for as long as possible”. If you do this, your head will spin less and the water in your ears won’t move around as much.

Other tips he gave were to avoid alcohol, caffeine, processed meats and highly salty foods.

Easy right? Well, Rebecca Graham, a member of the Show Radio team, made it her mission to test out the theories. Check out her experience here:
