The Oldest Mounted Police Unit in the World!

Join the Party as the NSW Mounted Police Celebrates 200 years at the Sydney Royal Easter Show!

Back in 1825, the NSW Mounted Police were the original outback patrol, chasing convicts and bushrangers across the wild Australian landscape. With their horses giving them speed and a better view, they helped keep the growing colony in check. Now, 200 years later, they’re celebrating their Bicentennial with special performances at the Sydney Royal Easter Show.

“The RAS has been incredibly generous in giving us full arena access,” said Superintendent Julian Griffiths, Commander of the NSW Dog and Mounted Police. “We’ll be showcasing an extended version of our historic Musical Ride, alongside celebrations for 130 years of the NSW Police Band and 100 years of the Highway Patrol.”

But what exactly is a Musical Ride? “It’s a precision performance featuring our troop horses, judged over four nights,” explains Sergeant Melinda Murray, a Mountie with 30 years of experience. “It’s been a tradition at the Easter Show for over a century, with more than 500 performances.

Superintendent Griffiths took me on a rare behind-the-scenes tour of the NSW Mounted Police unit in Redfern. The scent of leather and hay filled the air as hooves echoed through the spotless stables. Inside, I discovered a fascinating museum packed with artifacts and memorabilia showcasing the unit’s 200-year history—the oldest continuous Mounted Police force in the world. Lining the walls were historic photographs, some set to be projected onto the main arena during the Show. Beyond policing, these horses help strengthen community ties. “People are more likely to approach a horse, which starts conversations and builds trust with officers,” says Murray. “We visit schools, nursing homes, and regional shows, making real connections with the public.”

“During major events like protests, we can spot officers needing assistance and move in quickly,” says Murray. “We also assist in search and rescue, reaching areas even trail bikes can’t access.”

For those dreaming of becoming a Mountie, it takes dedication. “You need to be a police officer first, then pass a rigorous riding and fitness test,” says Griffiths. “But we’re always looking for passionate riders.”
