Some would say they prefer quality over quantity. In this century, for a lot of people quality is more often the favourite option. In the world of agriculture however, quality and quantity go hand in hand; if you have an exceptional product, multiply it.
Richard Duddy and his family own and operate cattle stud Killain Angus just outside of Tamworth. Duddy has had a very long history at the Sydney Royal Easter Show, showcasing cattle most of his life. Killain Angus is a relatively new business for the family, established in 2013. Utilising years of experience, the family was keen to hit the ground running with only the best of the best.
Most of the cattle on Duddy’s farm are offspring from frozen embryos and sperm samples imported from the US that came from top, awarding winning bulls and cows. By starting from scratch with just offspring from these sources, as well as healthy cattle from Australia, Killain Angus quickly became on of the most well regarded studs in NSW. Since its establishment, livestock from the stud has topped many regional competitions, including the famed Hordan Trophy at the Sydney Royal Easter Show in 2016.
The process of keeping a well regarded herd is always ongoing. Duddy is constantly keeping a track of where the best livestock is, and sourcing new livestock to continuously improve the stud. Gone are the days of traditional farming and breeding. Agriculture is a competitive business, and the science behind what makes a sufficient herd requires constant attention.
