The seasons are changing and that means you’re looking for something cozy to wear. Maybe some wool? How about some alpaca wool?
At 9:30 am, the pavilion was filled with parents and children listening to a lecture about the difference between llamas and alpacas.
However, the ladies of From Fleece to Fashion were in the corner of the pavilion, busy working away with alpaca fibre.
In the Cattle and Alpaca Pavilion, Beverly Burns from Mandala Alpaca in the Central Coast ran a weaving, spinning and knitting workshop throughout showing showgoers at the Sydney Royal Easter Show the good quality clothing without the allergens that come from sheep wool.
Around them were items of clothing in glass cases that were all made from Alpaca wool.
“Most people don’t understand what happens with yarn and how items that they buy and wear every day are created”, Burns said.
There were eight other women working with alpaca fleece around that small section of the pavilion. One was using the loom, a couple of others were spinning the raw fibres into yarn, and the rest were crocheting.
“This is another use for these fibres, you turn those into the beautiful jumpers and scarves that so many people are realising that the way to go”, Burns said.
Burns said that groups come back to the easter show every year. So don’t worry if you missed your opportunity this year there will always be From Fleece to Fashion in 2026.
