We take a look back at the history of The Royal Easter Show.

The Sydney Easter Show celebrates its 200th Year in 2023. The AFTRS Show Radio team takes a look back at the beginnings of The Show.

The Sydney Royal Easter Show began in 1823. The show started as a celebration of Australian Culture. Including rural traditions, stalls and displays, as well as carnival games and scrumptious food!

The money raised from the proceeds of the show (by the Royal Agricultural Society) goes into education, competitions, and rural NSW.

The original site for The Sydney Royal Easter Show was at Moore Park (The Entertainment Precinct), it was at this site for 116 years. Thus is also where the AFTRS calls home. Think of that when you hear the radio team reporting every day on 107.9FM! The Show now operates out of Olympic Park- the geographic heart of Sydney.

Barry Keohane AFTRS graduate of 1997 and now Regional Content Director for Wave FM in Wollongong, looks back at his time on AFTRS Show Radio fondly. His cohort was the last year The Show was held in the historic location in Moore Park.

“Show Radio was one of my favourite memories of the radio course.  I think we might have been the last year where the show was at the old Showgrounds near the SCG.  What I liked about show radio was that it gave everyone a chance to take on every role.  From announcer to producer, news reader, music director, and content director.  Plus I think I consumed my weight in churros and dagwood dogs”.

The show still celebrates its agricultural roots with many programs promoting farming, livestock and has a strong emphasis on community spirit.

If you see A Show Radio Team member around The Show, please stop for a chat over a dagwood dog! We might even interview you for the radio!

AFTRS and the Show Radio Team looks forward to partnering with The Sydney Royal Easter Show for its 200th year and promoting the value for future generations.
