Let’s hop in a Time Machine and rewind right back to Tasmania in 1870.
Rumour has it, this was where the first ever woodchopping competition was held, between two axe men. They were racing to cut down a tree trunk!
29 years later on the final day of The Sydney Royal Easter Show, more than 8,000 people were packed into the cattle judging arena to witness history. The standing block woodchopping competitions have now become a show highlight, with a huge crowd year after year!
The Sydney Royal Easter Show is the home of Australia’s biggest woodchop competition. It’s an iconic event where world records are set and smashed! Watch the chips fly as axes are swung with force, with competitors striving for their wood to hit the ground first. Registrations are open six months prior to the event, allowing for competitors to travel from across the globe for that ‘World Champion’ title.
Show Radio Presenter Myoung spoke with Daniel this morning, an offical volunteer at the Sydney Royal Easter Show. In fact, it was Daniel’s very first shift on site today! Myoung asked Daniel for some hot tips on how to keep yourself safe while you’re out and about, along with what it’s like to watch the professionals compete at the Ugly Fish Woodchop Stadium.
Here are some of Daniel’s top tips:
- Wear SPF! Even if you can’t see the sun, it can see you.
- Protect yourself with a hat and sunglasses. These won’t just protect you from the sun, but also any chips that could fly your way at the competition!
- Stay hydrated. Keep an eye out for the free water stations located all around the show. Bring your drink bottle with you so you can fill it up throughout the day.
Despite Daniel thinking he might not be the best woodchopper, he says it’s all about the angle of your axe. If you angle it right, and hit your trunk with force – watch it chip and keep on chopping!
