A Royal Reassurance to Show Radio in a Time of Challenge

Keep Calm and keep on self-isolating was the message from Show Radio on Easter Friday when Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II popped in for a chat. Show Radio is the official broadcaster of the Sydney Royal Easter Show after all!

Of course, the Queen couldn’t really pop in. She’s in self-isolation in Windsor with Prince Phillip and the corgis! But the Queen is head of the Commonwealth of Nations, of which Australia is a part. And in her 68 years on the throne, the Queen has been a stalwart in offering guidance and calm when the world has turned on its head. This is one of those times. In her recent address to the Commonwealth on the COVID 19 crisis facing the world, she gave advice on how to weather the storm and reassurance that better days will return. It was a special address — only the fifth in her reign — and the Queen thanked everyone for continuing to self isolate, adding that “though self-isolating may at times be hard, many people of all faiths, and of none, are discovering that it presents an opportunity to slow down, pause and reflect, in prayer or meditation.”

She reflected on the first broadcast she had done in 1940, when she was joined by her sister Princess Margaret to talk to other children, kids who had been sent away from their families for their own safety, adding that “while we have faced challenges before, this one is different. This time we join with all nations across the globe in a common endeavour. Using the great advances of science and our instinctive compassion to heal, we will succeed, and that success will belong to every one of us.”
