Picture this: A perfect sunny autumnal morning, the first day of the Sydney Royal Easter Show. My mission was to pick a ride and test some professional tips on how not to get dizzy.
Easy. I can do that. I used to enjoy rides. Fast forward to fifty something mum by herself and wondering if this mission was fun or potentially traumatising.
Doubts aside and telling myself that at the very least it would result in all day queasiness (combined with whiplash) I found myself chatting with the ride worker of the Space Rolla – who told me it was not scary and said I could have a ride on it.
Ok I thought, she’s my age, I’ll do it.
I had no clue what this ride does as it was stationary. It probably would have been smart to check what the Spacerolla did before being strapped in as tightly as a toddler in a car seat. Too late to change my mind now.
Slowly upwards I went – and then backwards (ah of course it did, I don’t even sit on a bus facing backwards) and I braced myself.
The speed picked up and the carriage soared up into the air, spinning like a windmill – the g force was beyond description. Round and around, it was relentless. My eyes firmly closed all the while this strange giggling sound came from my mouth that I had not heard since 1986 (the last time I was on a ride).
This was fun! I was having an absolute blast! I was 16 again!
I was dizzy, I was dishevelled, and I was exhilarated. I surprised myself, and yes, I’d do it all over again.
